Organic Matter
Ceramics I, 5 x 3 in, Fall 2023
The main goal of this assignment was to create a platter using the slab building technique. Conceptually, I wanted to give it the illusion of an aged sheet of paper or parchment, so I warped the edges in a freeform manner to emulate that. I also used white raku to give it the crackled effect. This piece is meant to reflect on the natural world and its inevitable destruction of the manmade.
Leafy
Ceramics I, 5" diameter Fall 2023
The technical goal of this assignment was to build a pinchpot using 1 lb of clay. I wanted to make it a leaf because I take most of my inspiration from nature, so why not? I used olive green celadon glaze to achieve the dark foresty green I wanted and fired it in oxidation to ensure that tone.
Bubble Mug
Ceramics I, 4 x 2 in, Fall 2023
The technical goal here was to create a mug using the slab building technique. I wanted to create something personal to me, and mugs have always reminded me of my father, who is a tech diver. So, I pressed a string of mardi gras beads into the sides to create a bubble effect, and half glazed it with glossy blue celadon. I then had it soda fired to achieve the coppery brown I wanted as "sand".
Rebecca
Ceramics I, 12 x 12 in, Fall 2023
This assignment was to create anything we wanted using the coil building technique. I wanted to build a planter with references to classical statues. I built Rebecca with half of her face 'missing' to portray a sense of anonymity and to reference the loneliness of the artistic mind. However, I made her a planter to show that life can burst forth from these creative minds.
